The Northern Virginia Chapter is easily accessible to ASA members living in Southern Maryland, DC and Northern and Central Virginia. We meet 6 times a year with 4 lectures, a cutting exchange and a plant sale. In early May we enjoy a tour of local azalea gardens. Of course, we are always happy to answer questions and discuss items of interest. Stop by and enjoy the company of friendly people who share a passion for azaleas!

The chapter met for a February  meeting at the George Mason Library in Annandale and new officers were elected.  Eve Harrison was re-elected President and Rick Bauer was elected as Vice-President, Rosie Field was elected as the new Secretary and Dave Nanney was re-elected as Treasurer.  We heard plans for the following events and then were treated to a wonderfully informative slide presentation and lecture by Jean and Norman Beaudry showing their gardens from their beginning over the last 20 years to present.  Many different types of plant material were shown with references to cultivars that made for a fascinating lecture.

April 27 will be a picnic at Leslie and Dave Nanney's in Springfield.  Everyone is welcome to bring pot luck and enjoy a preview of the Nanney's gardens which will be on the tour for the convention in 2009.

 

May 9, 10 and 11 the chapter will have a booth at the annual Va. Arboretum Garden Fair [Blandy Arboretum, http://www.virginia.edu/blandy] where we will sell the more rare hybrid azaleas as a fund raiser for the coming convention we will host in 2009.

 

There will be an annual cutting exchange in July, date and place to be announced.

 

On August 24 we will hold our second annual public auction at Merrifield Garden Center in Fairfax at 12101 Lee Highway.  The auction will have many refreshments and over 100 azaleas at auction.  There will be music and digital slides of most of the varieties offered.  Members are encouraged to take pictures this spring of the cultivars they will be donating and provide names to Rosie Field in the coming months.
